Malaysia Student Visa Registration Process: What to Do After Arrival

This blog is a complete practical guide for new students arriving in Malaysia on a student visa.

Although the exact process may vary slightly depending on your university, most of the documents and steps remain the same across Malaysian public universities.

Arrival in Malaysia (Immigration Process)

Once you land in Kuala Lumpur, proceed to the extreme right side at immigration, where there are specific counters dedicated to students. I mistakenly queued in a regular line, but after checking my documents, the immigration officer redirected me to the student counters.

I do not fully remember the exact numbers, but they were around Counter 16, 17, and 18 (these may change over time). The key point is that students have separate immigration counters, so make sure to go there directly.

Keep the following documents ready:

• Passport
• Single Entry Visa
• Boarding pass

The immigration officer will place two stamps in your passport (one is the student pass; I’m not entirely sure about the other). These stamps are mandatory for the next steps at your university, so check them carefully before leaving the counter.

Reporting to the University (USM Case)

After arriving at the university — in my case, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) — I was required to complete two main things:

1. Medical Insurance
2. Medical Examination / Medical Certificate

Both of these are completed inside the university.

I visited the Visa Management Unit at IMCC (International Mobility & Collaboration Centre) within USM.

The office is located on the first floor. You need to take a token from the machine and wait for your turn. I recommend reaching around 9:00 AM. You may see a few students already waiting, but the process is generally smooth and quick.

When my turn came, I asked about medical insurance. The staff member gave me a contact number and asked me to call or send a WhatsApp message.

I sent a WhatsApp message and was asked to share:

• Passport main page photo
• Single Entry Visa photo
• University email ID

I was instructed to pay RM 320 to a CIMB Bank account, which is conveniently located right opposite the Visa Management Unit. I paid the amount in cash at CIMB, sent the payment slip via WhatsApp, and within one hour, I received my insurance document by email.

After that, the next step was the medical examination.

The USM Medical Centre is about a 7-minute walk from the Visa Management Unit.

Once you arrive at the medical centre, you must scan a QR code at the entrance to book your appointment. I reached a few minutes before 10:30 AM and managed to get a same-day slot at 10:30 AM.

The last appointment slot is usually 11:30 AM, and the medical centre closes at 12:00 noon, so it’s best to go early.

You will need:

• Email address or local mobile number
  (I used my USM email to complete the booking.)

After completing the booking steps, you will receive a QR code.

Inside the Medical Centre

Scan your QR code at the gate to enter. Inside, there is a small queue near a machine where you scan your QR code again to get a receipt with a number. Staff members are available to guide you if needed.

Take this receipt and go to the first floor registration hall. You will be asked for:

• Student offer letter
• Passport

You will also need to pay RM 360 in cash.

The medical process may take up to one hour, but it is well organised.

After completion, you will be asked to return at 2:00 PM to collect your reports. At the final step, you will meet a doctor who will sign and hand over your medical reports.

You will receive two copies:

• One for the Visa Management Unit (IMCC)
• One for IPS

By this time, the Visa Management Unit is usually closed, so you will need to return the next day.

Final Submission at Visa Management Unit (IMCC)

The next day, I reached the Visa Management Unit at 9:00 AM, with the following documents prepared:

• Passport main page copies (2)
• Passport stamp page copies (KL airport stamp) (2)
• Single Entry Visa copies (2)
• eVAL copies (2)
• Medical Certificate (1 original)
• Health Insurance (1 copy)

When my turn came, the officer quickly reviewed the documents and asked me to pay RM 340 via card. I paid using my credit card.

The process was then completed. I was advised to check my email regularly and allow around two weeks for further updates.

I hope this guide helps you if you are coming to Malaysia on a student visa, especially if you are joining Universiti Sains Malaysia. While minor steps may vary between universities, the overall process and required documents are mostly the same.
